A Look into Online Blackjack Games

Blackjack Rules

Blackjack is a game that is always played against the dealer (the banker) and it is never played against other players. The main aim is to beat the dealer and you can do so by reaching as close to 21 as possible by using the cards that you are dealt. When a new game has started, both the player and the dealer will initially be dealt two cards. Any other players who are playing will also be dealt two cards.

The best possible hand in this fast paced card game is called a Natural Blackjack, which is when you achieve blackjack with those first two cards (when the total value of those two cards is equal to 21 points). Therefore if you are dealt a Jack and an Ace with those first two cards, your total value is 21.

An Ace is worth either 1 point or 11 points. Jacks, Queens and Kings are all worth 10 points and all of the other numbered cards are worth their face value. For example a 10 is worth 10 points, a 9 is worth 9 points and so on. If you are dealt an Ace and a 9, the value of your hand could therefore be equal to either 10 or 20 (1 + 9 or 11 + 9).

Once you have been dealt those first two cards, you can try to improve your hand by taking more cards, one at a time. You can select 'Hit' to take another card or 'Stand' if you are confident with your current hand. The dealer generally has to hit up to 16 and stand on all 17's. If your hand is better than the dealers, you will instantly double your money and all winnings will be paid out automatically. Winning with a natural blackjack will pay 3:2.

Blackjack Strategy

There is a basic blackjack strategy available for players and using this basic strategy can marginally reduce the house edge and it mainly involves using common sense. For example, there are times when you should never hit and there are times when you should never split. You should also try to base your decision on what the dealer is showing, because one of his cards will always be dealt face up for you to see.

If you are playing over a prolonged period of time, the main aim is to lose as little cash as possible and this can be achieved when using this basic blackjack strategy. You must try not to get too greedy and try to keep to the same strategy while playing.

It would be a good idea to always stand when you hand totals 17-20, but depending on what the dealers face up card is, you may need to hit in this situation. You should always stand with 'Ace 8' and 'Ace 9', or '10 10'. Always Split two Aces and always split two 8's. Always hit if your hand is only worth between 5 and 8 points. These are just a few pointers to keep in mind, but there are plenty more standard moves that you can use to help you win.
