Problem Summary

The player had an action sequence that they were too focused on playing to actually enjoy. The player would like to be able to enjoy that action sequence without having to play that section of the game over. The player could have also had a action sequence occur to them that would be useful to watch in order to learn how their actions got them to a particular conclusion.

Use When

Any games that have fast paced action. This can be seen in most genre of games including sports, action, FPS, RPG, racing, and casual games.
Main use is when the player has achieved or failed to achieve a particular goal or objective.

Solution

  • When completeing objectives in FPS games, you dont want to be interrupted by an instant replay of your action. However there are times when you fail to complete an objective and a game will show a instant replay of the action. Can bee seen in the TF2 example below.
  • A sample recording of moments before and after goal was/was not achieved. A simple example is when a player makes a soccer goal, then do a instant replay of the few moments before and after the goal was made. Even providing camera options would be useful.

Recommendations

When implementing this pattern be sure to add some basic portions of instant replay. Most instant replays allow the user to replay the action at a later time. All instant replays show important events. If you allow the user to save and replay the action at a later date, be sure to add speed and camera controls that are easily accessible.

Rationale

Allowing the user to replay important events allows the user to gain satisfaction since the user no longer has to concentrate on the action and can relax and watch what happened all around. With the ability to save the replay the user can see how they did and can improve their skills by learning from mistakes.

Examples

[TF2] At 0:11 you see a an instant replay of a death. Its a quick snapshot of who killed you, where they were, and what weapon. [Soul Calibur] An example is located between 1:04 and 1:08.
