Problem Summary

Action within a game occurring in real time happens too quickly for fun gameplay.

Use When

  • The game is moving too quickly for the player to accurately control and play the game
  • The player has a limited amount of time to do many tasks
  • Slow down the game to give a certain player an advantage
  • The game play needs to be modified to make the game accessible to players with disabilities

Solution

Slow down time to allow the player to a better chance for success

In a first person shooter, a player who is in a difficult situation can utilize the slow down feature to have a better chance at getting through the situation. For example, in the Matrix, the "Bullet Time" effect was used to allow the player to dodge bullets.

This can also be used when a player is trying to sneak past guards. The player can walk at regular speeds, but since the guards are in slow time, they would not have the chance to see the player sneak buy

Slowing down the game can also give players in multiplayer games a chance to catch up. For example, in Super Mario Kart, the last place player can receive a Lightning Bolt Bonus, which when activated will slow down the game for all the other players, yet keep the game at the same speed for the player who activated the bolt. This will give the last place player a chance to catch up.

If a player has a limited amount of time to do many tasks, the use of slowing down time can help a player. For example, if a player had to run through a house before it exploded, but he also had to pick up certain items from the house. Slowing down time would make an otherwise impossible task possible.

Recommendations

  • Each time the Slow Mode is activated, only use for a limited amount of time
  • Do not over use - This could make the game too easy

Rationale

Slowing down time will allow the player to have a better experience by giving the player more control over the character.
